Gas Line Repair Vancouver
Smelling gas near the range or water heater? Installing a new gas appliance? Building a gas-fired patio heater or fireplace? Certified gas fitter on staff - no subbing to third party.
FortisBC coordination, City permits, Red Seal certified gas fitter. (778) 961-0824 - call from outside if you smell gas.
Gas Line Work in Vancouver - Why Certification Matters
BC requires Red Seal certified gas-fitters for any gas appliance install, repair, or line modification. Working on gas without certification is a code violation, voids insurance, and risks lives. We have a certified gas fitter on staff – no subbing the gas-side work to a third party.
Common Vancouver gas line jobs:
New gas appliance install. Gas range, gas dryer, gas water heater (see hot water tank service), gas fireplace, outdoor BBQ connection, gas patio heater, gas firepit, gas generator. Each requires correctly sized gas line, shut-off valve, pressure regulation if needed, leak test before commissioning, City permit, and FortisBC coordination. $789-$2,489 typical per appliance.
Gas line modification for renovations. Kitchen remodel relocating the range. New island with gas cooktop. Adding gas to a new patio for outdoor cooking. Replacing electric appliances with gas. Each requires re-sized supply piping (gas demand changes), new shut-offs, and code-compliant routing. $989-$3,489 depending on scope.
Gas leak detection and repair. Smell of gas near an appliance or along a gas line. We isolate the line, locate the leak with soapy water and electronic gas detector, repair the failed section, pressure-test before reactivation. $589-$1,489 typical. Critical – do not stay in the house if you smell gas. Call from outside or a neighbour’s.
Gas service line replacement. Existing gas service from the meter to the house is failing (rare but does happen with very old galvanized service lines). Coordinated with FortisBC for the public-side replacement. $2,489-$5,989 typical homeowner portion.
All gas work pulled through City of Vancouver permits, FortisBC coordination for service-side work, leak-tested before activation, certificate of work emailed at completion. $5M general liability, full WCB. 24/7 emergency dispatch for gas smell – call (778) 961-0824 from outside the house.

New Gas Appliance Installation
Installing a new gas appliance in a Vancouver home or commercial property requires more than just connecting a flex line. Every install includes proper sizing, code-compliant routing, shut-off valves, pressure regulation where needed, leak testing, and City inspection.
Process for a typical new gas range install:
Site assessment first. Verify the existing gas service capacity (most Vancouver homes have 1/2″ gas service from the meter – adequate for typical residential demand but may need upgrade for multiple new gas appliances). Check the existing gas line routing to the kitchen, identify the new appliance location, plan the route.
Material specifications. Black iron pipe for hard-piped runs (standard for Vancouver gas lines), flexible stainless connector at the appliance (CSA-certified gas appliance connector), brass shut-off valve, optional appliance regulator if the appliance requires lower pressure than the supply.
Install execution. Shut off gas at the meter (FortisBC coordination if service interruption needed), run new black iron supply line from existing trunk to the new appliance location, install shut-off valve within reach of the appliance, transition to flexible connector at the appliance, leak-test the entire run at 1.5 PSI for 15 minutes (BC code requirement), reactivate gas, light pilot or commission the appliance.
City of Vancouver permits required for any new gas appliance install. We pull the permit, schedule the rough-in and final inspections, produce a stamped certificate of work for your insurance file and property records.
Common new install jobs and prices: gas range $789-$1,489. Gas water heater (paired with tank install) $589-$1,189 for gas portion alone. Gas dryer $589-$989. Gas fireplace (insert or factory-built) $1,489-$2,989. Outdoor BBQ quick-connect $389-$789. Gas patio heater $589-$1,189. Gas generator $1,789-$3,489.
FortisBC coordination is included on jobs that require service-side work or service capacity upgrades. We handle the FortisBC paperwork, schedule the service work, and coordinate with our City inspection.

Gas Leak Detection, Repair, and Emergency Response
If you smell gas, leave the house immediately. Do not flip light switches, do not turn off appliances – sparks ignite gas. Call FortisBC (1-800-663-9911) for the gas service emergency and us at (778) 961-0824 for the plumbing-side coordination.
Once the immediate gas service is secured, our gas fitter responds with electronic gas detectors and the certified equipment to locate the failed section.
Leak detection process:
Isolate the line. Close the meter valve or the appropriate appliance shut-off to stop gas flow. Confirm with soapy water at the meter that the leak isn’t on the FortisBC service-side (their problem, not ours).
Locate the failure. Electronic gas detector (TIF 8800 or equivalent) plus soapy water on every joint, fitting, and section of the suspect line. Locates the exact point of failure typically within 15-30 minutes.
Repair. Cut out the failed section, install new black iron pipe with appropriate fittings, leak-test the repaired section at 1.5 PSI for 15 minutes per BC code, reactivate the line, verify with the gas detector that no other leaks exist.
City inspection. Required for any gas line modification – we schedule the inspection, the City inspector verifies the repair meets code, certificate of work issued.
Common gas leak repair scenarios in Vancouver: failed flare fittings on flexible connectors (most common, 60% of leaks we find), corroded threaded connections on older black iron, hairline cracks in galvanized steel service lines (rare but does happen on pre-1970 properties), failed appliance shut-off valves.
Typical gas leak repair cost: $589-$1,489 depending on location, accessibility, and scope. Includes leak detection, repair, leak retest, City inspection, certificate of work. Insurance documentation included free.
24/7 emergency dispatch for gas smell. Phones answered live at (778) 961-0824. Call from outside the house.

9 Gas Line Tips Every Vancouver Property Owner Should Know
- If you smell gas, leave the house immediately. Do not flip light switches, do not turn off appliances – sparks ignite gas. Call FortisBC (1-800-663-9911) and us from outside the house.
- Know where your gas shut-off is. Usually at the meter outside the house or where the gas service enters. Has a 1/4-turn lever. Tag the location with a Sharpie label, photo it, share with everyone in the household.
- Test for gas smell quarterly. Pass through the basement, mechanical room, behind the range, near the water heater, near the fireplace. Gas smell is intentional (mercaptan additive) so you can detect leaks. 30-second walkthrough catches most leaks early.
- Don’t DIY gas work in BC. BC code requires Red Seal certified gas fitters for any gas appliance install or repair. DIY is a code violation, voids insurance, and risks lives. Worth the $589-$1,489 to do it properly.
- Get a permit and certificate for every gas install. City of Vancouver requires permits. Missing permits complicate resale and any future insurance claim. We pull the permit and produce certificate on every job.
- Replace flexible connectors during renovations. CSA-certified gas appliance connectors have ~10-year recommended service life. If you’re already moving the appliance, replace the connector. $20 part, 5 minutes labour – cheap insurance.
- Don’t store anything against the meter or service line. Wood piles, lawn equipment, garden tools – keep them clear of the meter. FortisBC needs access for emergencies and reads. Bylaws prohibit blocking the meter.
- Plan capacity upgrades during renovation. Adding multiple gas appliances (range plus dryer plus tankless plus BBQ) may require upsizing the service from 1/2″ to 3/4″. Plan during the renovation rough-in, not after – much cheaper before drywall.
- If you smell gas inside the wall, evacuate. Pinholes in concealed gas line are serious. Don’t try to locate it yourself – call us and FortisBC. We have detectors that find behind-wall leaks safely.
