Hose Bib Installation Vancouver

Garden tap that won't turn on after winter? Burst hose bib flooding behind the wall last February? Frost-free hose bibs prevent the most common Vancouver freeze damage.

Woodford 17 and Prier C-244 frost-free bibs. $329-$549 per bib. Multi-bib swap discount. (778) 961-0824.

Hose Bib Installation in Vancouver

Hose bibs (also called sillcocks, garden taps, or yard hydrants) are the exterior valves you attach a garden hose to. Most pre-2000 Vancouver homes have standard non-frost-free bibs – a brass valve with the seat in the bib body, exposed to freeze damage every winter. Installing frost-free models with long stems that put the seat inside the heated house is the long-term fix.

Standard freeze pattern in Vancouver: garden hose left connected, first hard freeze in November, water in the bib body freezes, ice expands, brass cracks. The crack often isn’t visible until you turn the water on in April – then it sprays inside the wall behind the bib. We see this every spring.

Frost-free hose bibs (Woodford 17, Prier C-244) have a long stem that moves the actual valve seat 6-12 inches inside the heated wall cavity. Water sits in the heated zone, not the exterior body. They drain automatically when shut off – no water in the exposed pipe to freeze.

Replacement cost: $329-$549 per bib including the frost-free unit, install, and exterior trim. Multi-bib swap (most homes have 2-4 exterior bibs) gets a discount – $589-$1,289 for all bibs done at once.

Best time to install: fall before the first freeze (September-October). Acceptable any time of year except during active freeze events. Standard install 90-120 minutes per bib. We shut off interior, cut out the old bib, install the frost-free with proper slope to drain, exterior trim, sealing, test for leaks, restore service. Phones answered 24/7 at (778) 961-0824.

Frost-Free Installation Process

Frost-free hose bibs must be installed with proper drain slope (the unit slopes downward 1/4″ so when shut off, all water in the long stem drains out into the exterior). Improper install means residual water that still freezes. We install per Woodford and Prier specs.

Standard install process: shut off interior at the supply valve, drain the bib, cut out the old bib body from the exterior, run a new SharkBite or copper sweat connection to the supply pipe inside the wall, install the frost-free unit with proper slope, seal the exterior penetration with silicone, test by running water through and shutting off – confirm full drain.

Many Vancouver homes have the original supply pipe running through an exterior wall cavity. We verify the supply pipe is in good condition (no internal corrosion) and replace with PEX-A if galvanized or aged copper. Adds $89-$189 to the install cost but ensures the supply behind the bib won’t fail.

Backflow prevention. BC plumbing code requires anti-siphon protection on hose bibs to prevent backflow into the potable water system if you accidentally leave a hose connected with the end in a bucket of contaminated water. Frost-free bibs (Woodford 17, Prier C-244) include integrated anti-siphon protection. No separate device needed.

Locking caps available for high-theft areas. $89 add-on per bib.

Multi-Bib Swap & Annual Maintenance

Most Vancouver homes have 2-4 exterior bibs – front yard, back yard, sometimes side yard or garage. If one bib has frozen and burst, the rest are at the same risk. Swapping all bibs in one visit is faster and cheaper than individual jobs.

Multi-bib swap pricing: 2-bib package $589-$889. 3-bib package $789-$1,189. 4-bib package $989-$1,289. Includes all bibs, install, exterior trim, and pressure test of each.

Bundled with freeze prevention: if you’re also adding heat-trace cables or upgrading pipe insulation in the same visit, we discount the bib swap cost.

Annual fall winterization. Even with frost-free bibs, you should disconnect garden hoses by November 1 and close the interior supply valves on bibs you don’t need active during winter. We offer fall winterization service – disconnect hoses, drain bibs, blow out irrigation, set freeze-stats. $389-$689 depending on property size.

For seasonal homes and rental properties across Mount Pleasant and beyond, our winterization service is standard. Properties left to chance during cold snaps fail predictably.

Why Vancouver Homeowners Choose Mamba for Hose Bibs

Frost-Free Only

We don’t install standard non-frost-free bibs. Pacific climate freeze-thaw makes them a winter liability. Woodford 17 and Prier C-244 are the standards.

Proper Slope Install

Frost-free bibs only work if installed with proper drain slope. Many installers skip this; we don’t.

Multi-Bib Discount

Most homes have 2-4 bibs. Multi-bib swap discount makes it cheaper to do them all at once vs. one at a time.

Bundled with Freeze Prevention

Pair with heat-trace install or fall winterization for compounded freeze protection. See frozen pipe service.

9 Hose Bib Tips for Vancouver Homeowners

  1. Disconnect garden hoses by November 1. Hoses connected through the first freeze prevent the bib from draining. Single most common Vancouver freeze damage.
  2. Frost-free bibs need proper drain slope. 1/4″ downward slope to the exterior. Without slope, residual water still freezes. Verify on every install.
  3. Standard bibs are a winter liability. Pacific climate freeze-thaw cracks brass every few years. Frost-free is the lifetime fix.
  4. Multi-bib swap is cheaper than one at a time. Most homes have 2-4 bibs. Package discount saves on the total.
  5. Test bibs in October before the first freeze. Run water through each, shut off, verify the bib drains. Catches issues with time to fix.
  6. Replace galvanized supply behind the bib. If your supply pipe behind the bib is pre-1960 galvanized, replace with PEX-A while we’re already there. $89-$189 add-on.
  7. Fall winterization for seasonal properties. Drain bibs, blow out irrigation, set freeze-stat. $389-$689. See frozen pipe service.
  8. Locking caps deter casual theft. $89 add-on. Useful for downtown commercial and street-facing residential bibs.
  9. BC plumbing code requires anti-siphon protection. Frost-free bibs (Woodford 17, Prier C-244) include it. Standard old bibs don’t – another reason to upgrade.
