Excavation, Basin Install, and Lateral Tie-In
Installation process for a standard residential yard catch basin runs 1-2 days from excavation to surface restoration.
Day 1 morning: locate underground utilities (BC One Call ticket pulled 2-3 days before excavation, free service), mark the work area, excavate a 4’x4’x4′ pit at the basin location plus a trench from the basin to the storm lateral tie-in point. Excavation depth typically 18-30″ depending on existing grade and tie-in elevation.
Day 1 afternoon: set the precast concrete or fiberglass basin (Stonyhurst, Polylok, or NDS depending on application), level and seat with concrete or compacted drain rock, install the 4″ perforated PVC lateral from basin to tie-in, wrap with filter sock to prevent silt migration, connect to the storm lateral with a Mission Y-fitting or saddle tap.
Day 2 morning: backfill with 3/4″ clear drain rock around the basin and lateral pipe (provides void space for water flow), filter fabric layer, native soil compacted in lifts, topsoil and sod restoration. Pour concrete collar at the basin grate to anchor the grate level with surrounding grade.
Day 2 afternoon: City of Vancouver inspection (we schedule the rough-in and final inspections), water flow test (run a hose into the basin, verify free flow to the storm lateral), camera scope of the new lateral connection. Final cleanup and walk-through with the property owner.

Right-sizing the catch basin and lateral is what separates a one-time install from a basin that needs replacement in 3 years because it’s undersized.
Surface area to drain. Residential yard 200-500 sq ft of contributing surface usually needs a single 12″x12″ or 18″x18″ basin with 4″ lateral. Driveway 500-1500 sq ft typically needs 24″x24″ with 6″ lateral. Restaurant patio 200-400 sq ft needs trench drain plus 12″x12″ basin with 4″ lateral.
